To be sure the broadsword is far more powerful from a combat perspective and would definitely be your weapon of choice in a fight but sometimes a swiss army knife would simply serve you better. The Skeleton Key on the other hand is a general purpose item, and as such would be more useful than the Keyblade in resolving any situation that requires you to act subtly/within the limits of society or in which success can't be determined by strength alone.Īn applicable analogy would be comparing a broadsword to a swiss army knife (greater effectiveness in utility versus more varied utility). Whereas, in the same scenario, having the Skeleton Key, with it's ability to unlock your hidden potential and make you excell even in fields in which you have no prior experience would allow you to easily succeed ( and if it came to it you could simply resort to mind control).

What if you had to spy on someone or acquire an object of great value without being detected or outperform someone in a cooking competition or participate in any number of tasks where having immense strength has nothing to do with succeeding. If you had to destroy an army coming after you, win an arm wrestling competition or undertake any task where success is determined by raw strength, than the Keyblade would definitely outperform the Skeleton Key and be the best choice.īut what if the task you had to undertake was one where having strength availed you little to not at all. Furthermore even if he had been allowed to keep them, they still wouldn't have allowed him to pull half the things he did as not only does he do many things not explained by the Nightingale abilities (collapsing ceilings and towers and the like) but also the Nightingale abilities don't match the similar abilities he uses in-game (their range, how casually he can use them, that he has all of them at once etc). Given his far more serious crimes, there's no way Mercer was allowed to keep his powers. She had to beg Nocturnal to restore her status and even a modicum of said abilities as without them they'd have "no hope" of beating Mercer.
We see this clearly with Karliah, who upon disappointing Nocturnal in a far more minor manner than Mercer, had her Nightingale status revoked and relevant abilities that come with it removed despite having acquired them beforehand just like Mercer. As a result he no longer bore any divine aid or any of the powers normally available to a Nightingale. Here's the thing, by killing his fellow Nightingale violating his oaths and closing the Ebonmere, Mercer had fallen out of Nocturnal's favor. Attributing Mercer's feats to his being a Nightingale is wrong.
